19 AUG 2009
After about 6 months, I got the biggest surprise of my life. The police called my uncle and said that they have caught the suspect. Sure, he was the same guy who travelled with us. Except the money, police replaced all my lost things - cell phone, camera and gold chain (though they were not the exact ones that i lost). This made me change my opinion regarding the Tamil nadu police department.
I had a pick pocketing experience in AUG 2009 on my short visit to India. We were travelling in a night train from Madurai to Chennai in 2 AC. My handbag got stolen and i realized it right after we crossed Vilupuram around 3 am. We informed the TTR immediately. I did have suspicion on one of the fellow travellers - a single guy in his 20s, sitting on the side berth with the screens closed. Earlier in Madurai station, i caught him looking at us peering through his screens. We enquired about the suspect with the TTR. The suspect had gotten down at Villupuram and the address he had given was bogus. Once we arrived in Chennai, we gave a written FIR at the Egmore station. Inside the handbag, I had my US driver's license, 2 credit cards, 1 debit card, Rs 1500 cash, cell phone, Sony 14 Megpixel Camera and a 3 soverign gold chain. I listed all these things in the FIR, ask the police to make a copy of my FIR for my reference and also gave description of the suspect. We gave my uncle's contact information for future correspondence who happened to travel with us. At this time, I didn't have the slightest hope of getting back anything.
